Couples/Relationship Counselling
The way that I work
I have completed specialist training in counselling work for couples and relationships through The Grove Practice CPD provider whose ethos is based on person-centred principles. I have a Certificate in Couple/Relationship Therapy accredited by COSRT (College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists) at Level 5.
The training was based around the Homeodynamic model developed by Cabby Laffy and Polly McAfee, which sees a person as a constantly interacting system rather than separating their experience into "psychological" and "physical" issues. This involves looking at what may be happening within us as individuals; looking at our mind, body, brain and emotions and that these are continually influencing one another, whilst keeping in mind that we do not exist in isolation.
Our experiences and behaviours are influenced by our society, culture, external environment and of course other people; our families, friends and lovers including those from our past and whilst growing up. So, couples and relationship counselling is about exploring how all these factors interact in both relationship to ourselves and in relationship to our partners and others.
I currently offer Couples/Relationship Therapy face-to-face sessions and you will find me in Hitchin town centre, Hertfordshire where I use rooms at Leaf Health.
During our first few sessions I will gather some basic intake information which will include a history of your relationship. We will also discuss practical information including session arrangements.
You will be asked to be committed to working together outside of the session. Obviously, the more you put into your therapy, the more you will get from it and there are sometimes small ‘homework’ tasks set.
I ask that you communicate appropriately (with my help) and that there is no raising of voices or any physical or verbal aggression. I will treat all my clients with equality and fairness.
If only one person shows up for a therapy session, I will either cancel the session completely or offer that person an individual session, following which I will offer their partner an individual session in order to maintain equity.
